Some spaces just fight you. A lower backyard tier squeezed between a retaining wall and a fence - too narrow for easy mowing, too awkward to enjoy - is exactly the kind of spot that gets ignored. It collects weeds, grows uneven, and becomes a chore nobody wants to deal with. We see it all the time.

Here's what we were working with: a long, narrow strip of lawn sandwiched between a stacked stone retaining wall and a split-rail fence. Getting a mower in and out of a tiered setup like this is a pain. You're hauling equipment up and down steps, fighting tight angles, and the grass still ends up looking patchy. It's not worth it.

So we pulled it all out and installed artificial turf from wall to fence. Clean gravel border edging runs the full perimeter, which keeps things looking sharp and helps with drainage. The turf itself lays flat and consistent - no dead patches, no uneven spots, no mowing required. What used to be a headache is now a usable space.

The dogs are the real winners here. This is the kind of artificial pet area that actually makes sense for an active backyard - durable enough to handle running and play, easy to rinse off, and it stays green without any watering or upkeep. No mud tracked inside, no torn-up grass from digging. Just a solid surface the whole family can use.

Not every yard upgrade needs to be a major overhaul. Sometimes the best work we do is taking a small, frustrating space and making it genuinely functional. That's exactly what this one was about.
