Most golfers spend more time commuting to the course than actually practicing. This homeowner in Elizabeth wanted to change that - so we built them a full short-game setup right in the backyard. Multiple holes, dedicated chipping pads built into the corners, and sand-filled turf that rolls and responds like the real thing.

The chipping pads are a detail that a lot of people skip, but they make a huge difference. Instead of just putting from hole to hole, you can actually work on approach shots - which is where most golfers lose strokes anyway. Having that built into the layout from the start means this green gets used hard, not just admired.

The site itself had some challenges. A sloped grade isn't exactly ideal for a flat putting surface, so we used a boulder retaining wall to manage the grade change and create defined edges around the green. The boulders aren't just functional - they give the whole space a natural, course-like feel that fits the open surroundings perfectly. We also built out a flagstone step path to handle the slope on the side of the property, keeping everything accessible and tied together.

Sand-filled turf is worth talking about for a second. It's not the same as the turf you'd put in a low-traffic lawn area. The sand infill adds weight and stability to the fibers, which gives the ball that true, consistent roll you need if you're actually trying to practice - not just putt around. It's what separates a real practice green from one that just looks good in photos.

What we ended up with is a backyard that genuinely works for a golfer. Defined putting surface, corner chipping stations, boulder retaining wall, and a flagstone path tying it all together. The whole setup pulls from the natural Colorado landscape without feeling out of place - and it's ready to use every single day without any mowing, watering, or maintenance headaches.
